Uganda

INTRODUCTION OF DESTINATION UGANDA

Since 2005 there have been numerous expeditions to a small village Bufuka on the lake of Bunyoni on South-West of Uganda.  Volunteers live and work in a house, without water and power suply (although there is a solar panel for suny days). Local people come to seek medical help from villages nearby and from far away, sometimes they even paddle from the other side of the lake. Common diseases that people complain of are: infections of respiratory tract, dyspepsia, infections of genito-urinary system, injuries, burns, skin infections, malnutrition, infection with HIV virus, epilepsy, etc. It is still common that people first visit a traditional healer and then, if the problem does not improve, come to a doctor.
The nearest town Kabale is 10 kilometers away and there is a district hospital Kabale refferal, where patients from Bufuka are usually send, if they need hospital care or special diagnostic investigations. It is recommended that every group of volunteers spend first week after arriving working in that hospital to get aquainted with their way of work and tropical pathology.
At the moment we are working on a project of building a new clinic in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Uganda, Edirisa UK, and Church of Uganda. The new clinic will stand on Bwama island (half an hour paddling from Bufuka) and it will contain an Outpatient Department (OPD), Gynecology and Obstetric Department, Pediatrics and a Male Department. Our volunteers will be working mainly in OPD. Besides, we will organise an outreach programme, where we could provide medical curative and preventative care in remote areas. Our main focus is on those people who are most needed for medical attention. This programme will be done in cooperation with Edirisa UK volunteers, who will train and educate villagers about agriculture and english language.
Each expidition is obliged to have at least one graduated medical doctor with finished professional exam, who have to register at the Ugandan Medical and Dental Practitioner Council.
